Ravens rookie Nate Wiggins OK after car accident, won’t play against Raiders

OWINGS MILLS — Ravens rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins was not seriously injured after a car accident, but he won’t play Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, coach John Harbaugh confirmed on Friday.

Wiggins, the team’s first-round pick in April, has not practiced two this week and was listed on the injury report with a neck issue.  Harbaugh would not speculate on when Wiggins might be available.

“Nate was in a car accident a couple of days ago,” Harbaugh said. “They were kind of working through it. Looks like he’s not going to be able to make it to the game, so he’ll be out for this game with that. He’s fine, he’s healthy, he’s fine. He’s just not going to be able to play.”

Ravens tight end Mark Andrews and inside linebacker Josh Ross were also involved in car accidents over the past month.

Wiggins played 17 snaps and finished with two tackles in a 27-20 season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

His absence will affect how the Ravens rotate players in the secondary against Las Vegas this weekend. Wiggins played well throughout training camp and Harbaugh expects him to have a solid season.

“[Wiggins’ injury will] change [our rotations],” Harbaugh said. “We’ll get certain guys in there that will go in there and play and play very well.”

Outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy returned to practice after suffering a fractured orbital bone against Kansas City. His status for the game against the Raiders is uncertain.

“I’m feeling good, feeling optimistic,” Van Noy said. “I still have two days [to improve before Sunday’s game], obviously, and [I’m] just trying to do everything I can, and we’re looking to go 1-0 this week against the Raiders.

“They’re a good team, they’ve had success traveling east. Most West Coast teams don’t have as much success as the Raiders have, and they’ve done a good job with Antonio Pierce leading the helm.”
