Five Ravens who can boost their status in first preseason game

OWINGS MILLS — The Ravens have their first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, and a number of players can demonstrate why they should make the 53-man roster.

“I think we’ll get a lot of questions answered in this game in terms of where everybody’s at at this time in a real game situation,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Blocking, tackling, catching the ball, how we handle our assignments, things like that will be very interesting.”

Here are five players who can help their cause:

1. Offensive lineman Ben Cleveland: The Ravens selected Cleveland in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft, but he has not established himself as a consistent player, starting eight games in three years at guard. He is in the final year of his contract, and Cleveland needs to show that he can help the team over a 17-game season. He has taken snaps at center this offseason and if he can be successful, that versatility will help him stay on the roster. If not, Cleveland might be looking for a new home.

2. Safety Ar’Darius Washington: The Ravens like Washington and he needs to show that he can stay healthy. He has appeared in just eight games in three seasons. Last year, Washington was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a chest injury in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He did return in January and signed a one-year, $985,000 contract this offseason. With Arthur Maulet out with a knee injury, Washington could get opportunities to play at slot cornerback. He needs to make the most of the opportunity, and he has played well throughout training camp. The key is for him to stay on the field.

3. Running back Rasheen Ali: The rookie fifth-round pick is battling second-year player Owen Wright and undrafted rookie Chris Collier for the No. 3 running back. Overall, Ali is having an effective training camp. However, protecting the football has been an issue for Ali, who had 11 fumbles in the last three seasons in college. That will be an area the Ravens will be watching closely in the first preseason game.

4. Offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten: The rookie second-round pick will get an opportunity to show that he can be a starter. Rosengarten has played with the other starters in training camp and coach John Harbaugh likes what he’s seen so far. At 6 feet 5, 310 pounds, Rosengarten has the size to make an impact. He was a two-year starter at right tackle for the Huskies. He protected the blind side of left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr.,

5. Quarterback Josh Johnson: The 38-year-old journeyman has played for 14 NFL teams. He is 14-25 as a starter, throwing for 2,280 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions over his nine-year career. Harbaugh said he is  comfortable with Johnson as the main backup to quarterback Lamar Jackson, but there are still questions about whether he can effectively lead the offense. Johnson will get a chance to provide answers against the Eagles.
